Gmail Timestamp Display

Gmail shows “Jan 15” for older emails. Just the date.

Was it sent at 9 AM or 9 PM? Morning meeting follow-up or late-night panic email? You have no idea.

SEO Time Machines shows the full timestamp: “Jan 15, 2:34 PM.” Or “2024-01-15 14:34.” Or whatever format you prefer. The time that Gmail hid is now visible.

Your format. Applied everywhere.

Gmail’s Timestamp Limitations

Gmail formats timestamps based on age.

Today: Shows time (“2:34 PM”). This week: Shows day (“Tuesday”). Older: Shows date only (“Jan 15”).

You don’t get to choose. And older emails lose their time entirely.

Your Format, Your Way

Configure exactly how timestamps appear.

Gmail shows “2:34 PM” – you see “14:34”. Gmail shows “Tuesday” – you see “Tue, Jan 14”. Gmail shows “Jan 15” – you see “Jan 15, 2:34 PM” or “2024-01-15 14:34”.

Time format: 12-hour (2:34 PM) or 24-hour (14:34). Date format: Standard (Jan 15, 2024), ISO (2024-01-15), European (15 Jan 2024), or Full (January 15, 2024). Mix and match to create your preferred style.

Pick your format. Apply it everywhere. Gmail’s date decisions no longer limit you.

Why Format Matters

Documentation. International teams. Personal preference.

For documentation: ISO format (2024-01-15) sorts chronologically in spreadsheets and logs.

For international teams: 24-hour time eliminates AM/PM confusion across timezones.

For personal preference: You’ve read clocks a certain way your whole life. Why should Gmail override that?

For older emails: Gmail’s “Jan 15” tells you nothing about time of day. Full timestamps restore the missing information.
